Water-based cutting fluids are vital in molybdenum wire EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining) for cooling, flushing debris, and maintaining electrical properties. Most importantly, only purified water (deionized or distilled) should be used to mix this fluid.

Tap or mineral water contains dissolved salts and minerals (i.e., calcium, magnesium). During the EDM process's intense electrical discharges, these impurities can plate out onto the workpiece, wire, and machine components. This conductive scale disrupts the precise spark gap, causes uneven cutting, leads to poor surface finish, and can cause wire breakage or short circuits.

Impurities interfere with the carefully balanced chemistry of the cutting fluid concetration. They can reduce the fluid's effectiveness in preventing rust, promote bacterial growth, and diminish its lubricating and cooling properties.

Untreated water can cause unwanted electrolytic reactions, which will accelerates corrosion of the workpiece and the machine itself.

Using purified water can maximize cutting precision and surface quality, and protect the wedm machine (new or used) and workpiece from scaling and corrosion.
